Chichicastenango is the cradle of the Maya spirituality and its name derives from the Náhuatl, that means: "Surrounded by Poison Ivy".
The majority of its population is Maya Quiché, with four more Maya languages spoken there as well.
The Chichicastenango market is the largest handicrafts and textiles market in all of Central America. The market days are Thursdays and Sundays, except on Easter week and Christmas Eve.
The sacred book of the Mayans, "Pop Wuj" was found there.
