The name Tikal derives from the Maya Itzá and means "Place of Voices" and was declared a "Cultural World Heritage Site" in 1969 by UNESCO.
The history of the site goes back to the Middle Preclassic 800 - 400 B.C. period, but its peak and higher development happened during the Classic Period 250 - 900 A.D. when it became a City State. It is among the largest cities in the mesoamerican region.
It was a ruling site and its politics, economics, religion, science, astronomy and society influenced other sites. Tikal is surrounded by a vast rain forest and some of its buildings are some of the taller in the Maya zone (pyramidal structures).
For nature lovers this is an ideal place, because once you get in the Park (natural reserve) you find yourself surrounded by a vast jungle. Visitors often see the local fauna of the wilderness. This is a paradise for birdwatchers!

| Indications: | Tikal can be reached in different ways. One is driving througout the Interoceanic Highway CA-9 and on the Km. 246. at La Ruidosa village, you turn to the left and getting to Rio Dulce you need to drive five more hours to get to Tikal. Another route is to drive to Coban 209 Km./130 Mi. and turn to the road to Sayaxche. This route includes a ferry, and you pass by Santa Elena town and an hour later, you get to Tikal. The other way to go to Tikal is flying from the International Airport La Aurora to Mundo Maya International Airport in Santa Elena/Flores. There are two flights (50 minutes each), every day. |
