Verapaces

Alta and Baja Verapaz are hidden treasures sorrounded by an abundant cloud forest. Due to the area karst soil, intricate cave complexes, with stalactites and stalacmites formations are found there.  Some are dry caves such as Candelaria and Chicoy, while others are more humid or even wet caves with a river going or passing inside the cave like: Kamba and Rey Marcos caves.   According to the Maya vision of the cosmos and traditions, caves are the entrance or mouth to the underworld (Xibalba, described in the Popol Vuh sacred book of the mayas).
